2021 bmw g 310 gs [model overview]

BMW’s Pocket-Sized Adventure Tourer: The 2021 BMW G 310 GS

The G 310 GS is a small-capacity adventure touring motorcycle from European manufacturer BMW. There are a number of small displacement models in the 2021 BMW line-up, but this aggressive and compact tourer is arguably the most exciting. It takes inspiration directly from its larger GS-designated stablemates, but in a decidedly smaller and more accessibly, fun-filled package.

The G 310 platform showcases BMW Motorrad’s smallest product engine. It’s a 313 cc single-cylinder that packs a surprisingly powerful punch. In terms of performance, the G 310 GS’s powerplant produces 34 horsepower and 21 lb-ft of torque, with the power delivered to the rear wheel via a six-speed gearbox and chain drive. Combined, the G 310 GS can reach top speeds of up to 89 mph.

Aside from the bike’s rugged adventure ergonomics, the G 310 GS also packs a number of top features as standard equipment. These include ABS, USD forks, adjustable rear suspension, an LED taillight, a 19” front wheel, luggage rack, windshield, and more.

For 2021, the G 310 GS is available in a number of color options: BMW’s classic Pearl White Metallic Tricolor, Racing Red, and Cosmic Black. A special edition black and yellow design that celebrates 40 years of the GS brand designation is available in Canada and other markets, but currently not in the USA.

The 2021 BMW G 310 GS starts at $5,795 USD / $6,750 CAD

New LED Headlight & LED Turn Signals

Whereas the BMW G310GS was already equipped with brake lights in LED technology, the new BMW G310GS now has a full-LED headlight for even better visibility at night and LED flashing turn indicators for increased visibility in traffic. The new LED headlight ensures particularly bright and homogeneous illumination of the road. Due to the modified connection, distracting vibrations of the light cone are a thing of the past. The three light functions: high beam, low beam and daytime driving light (depending on the country) can be conveniently operated using the left handlebar controls.

EU-5 Compliant Single-Cylinder Engine

The new BMW G310GS receives emissions changes, making it Euro 5 and BS6-compliant. The heart of the bike is still a 313cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves and electronic fuel injection. The cylinder inclination to the rear and the cylinder head rotated by 180 degrees with intake at the front and exhaust at the rear remain the design characteristics. This arrangement follows the logic of optimal combustion air ducting and results in a particularly compact vehicle architecture pumping out 34 horsepower (25 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 21 ft-lbs (28 Nm) at 7,500 rpm.В

Automatic Idle Boost & Electronic Throttle Grip

For use in the new BMW G310GS, the engine has been equipped with a so-called “electronic throttle grip” (electromotive throttle controller) and now offers an even more sensitive throttle response. Automatic idle speed increase when starting also prevents a possible sudden stalling of the engine. The self-boosting anti-hopping clutch is also new. It reduces engine drag torque and provides a significant increase in driving safety – particularly during braking maneuvers involving simultaneous downshifting. It also offers significantly reduced operating forces at the clutch lever.

2021 BMW G 310 GS Features

Seat heights for every body size.

The G 310 GS provides the right seat for every rider type and in doing so enables relaxed and stress-free riding for all. In addition to the standard seat height of just 32.9″, two other options are available as special accessories: a lower option with 32.3″ and a higher, more particularly comfortable seat with a seat height of 33.5″.

The typical GS ergonomics.

Both the handlebars and the footrests and operating elements are arranged on the G 310 GS in a balanced way, thus guaranteeing the typical GS seat position. This ensures a relaxed and easily raised seat position for riders large and small for a perfect overview and precise handling.

Powerful brake system and standard ABS.

On the G 310 GS, ABS ensures safe braking maneuvers on every journey together with the powerful brake pads. The ABS can be switched off for off-road use.

BMW G 310 GS Latest Updates

BMW’s baby ADV bike, the G 310 GS, has received its second price hike for 2021. It now retails at Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), which is Rs 10,000 more than before.

A while back, BMW had unveiled the 2022 G 310 GS with new colour options that are expected to make their way here by the end of 2021. For full details, check out our story.

In October 2020, BMW Motorrad India blew us away with the price of the new BS6 G 310 GS. The smallest member of the GS family was priced at Rs 2.85 lakh (ex-showroom India) at launch, making it almost Rs 64,000 cheaper than the BS4 version. Now with the latest price hike, it undercuts its primary rival, the KTM 390 Adventure, by Rs 28,000.

BMW G 310 GS Specifications

BMW has made quite a few tweaks to the internals of the 313cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled mill. Output remains constant at 34PS and 28Nm but in our VBox acceleration test, we found it to be marginally slower than its BS4 counterpart. The six-speed transmission now gets a slip-and-assist clutch.
On the surface of it, the 43mm USD fork and preload-adjustable monoshock might seem to be identical to the older BS4 GS. However, BMW has changed the tune of the suspension units by a smidge, making them not too soft and wallowy. No changes to the braking hardware for the BS6 bike—300mm front disc and 240mm rear disc brake setup still bringing the bike to a halt. Dual-channel ABS remains but no possibility to switch intervention at the rear now.

BMW G 310 GS Design

Not much has changed in terms of the styling of the baby GS. It still looks the part of a GS motorcycle, with new attractive colours now offered. The quality of plastics and switchgear used is comparable to a bike thrice its value. There aren’t any loose wires to be seen, with seamless uniform welds to be found all across the trellis frame.

BMW G 310 GS Features

One of the major updates on the BS6 version of the G 310 GS is the new LED face. It is the same as its naked sibling, the G 310 R, and offers better illumination than the older halogen unit. LED turn indicators add to the premium look of the adventure motorcycle. Span-adjustable levers are a welcome addition to the motorcycle. The only dated bit on the bike remains the LCD dash, which doesn’t get any form of smartphone connectivity.

BMW G 310 GS Competitors

The BMW G 310 GS goes toe-to-toe with the KTM 390 Adventure. While priced lower than the baby GS, you can also look at the KTM 250 Adventure or the Royal Enfield Himalayan to satiate your adventure needs.

Two Exclusive Style Variants

The new BMW G310GS can be recognised at first glance by  its characteristic windscreen, high front fender, GS flyline and short, high rear end. It has the main elements, and colors of the large BMW R1250GS models as well as a dynamic appearance from the front thanks to the new LED headlight design. Also, all three color variants of the BMW G310GS have in common the engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and water pump, now painted in metallic titanium grey.

In addition to the typical GS colors in white with the basic color plain polar white and tank side panels in grey, the new BMW G310GS adds a new “40 Years GS” color as well as a Rallye style variant with a frame painted red and Kyanit blue metallic for the tank center cover and front.

As the “40 Years GS” edition, however, the BMW G310GS is based on a famous historical model from the BMW GS history – the R 100 GS. Accordingly, it is in black and yellow – with the basic color cosmic black and yellow graphics on the tank side panels. Just in time for the anniversary, BMW Motorrad is also presenting a new rider equipment collection.

BMW hasn’t announced pricing for 2021 yet. For more information go to the site.
